Jim Furyk last night became only the sixth golfer of all-time to card a sub-60 round, joining a select band of players to shoot an incredible 59.

The 43 year-old American hit 11 birdies, an eagle and a bogey at the BMW Championship in Illinois, though he is joined at the top of the leaderboard after two rounds by Brandt Snedeker.

“It’s absolutely the best round of golf I’ve ever played,” Furyk said afterwards.

Which is hard to argue with. His previous best round was 62, which he has shot on five occasions, but the American admitted it is hard to grasp the achievement so soon.

“It will sink in later and I’ll have to calm down and realise I’m in contention for the golf tournament.”

Furyk joins Al Geiberger (1977), Chip Beck (1991), David Duval (1999), Paul Goydos (2010), Stuart and Appleby (2010) in the illustrious list and is a feat which a European is yet to accomplish.

Furyk may be riding high in Illinois, but spare a though for Polish golfer Pawel Japol at the Ukranian Open. That tournament sees Andrei Shevchenko make his Tour debut, but the Pole had an opening round to forget, finishing on 37 over, and withdrew before the second round.

Funny old game golf.
