Video: For your viewing pleasure, five of the worst own goals you’ll ever see

Finding the back of the net is the aim of the game, provided it's not the back of your own net, of course.

Finding the back of the net is the aim of the game, provided it’s not the back of your own net, of course.

In honour of one of the great own goals last night in the game between Bohs and Athlone, we’ve decided to cast our minds back and think of a few of our absolute favourite OGs ever. Enjoy!

Team effort – Xinjiang v Liaoning

The National Chinese Games isn’t a tournament that we follow very closely, but this past September, this particularly special own goal went down in history as one of the best or one of the worst depending on your point of view. A complete miskick, followed by a botched bicycle kick followed by the goalkeeper missing the ball entirely. Everyone is at fault here.

Izaldo – Nautico v Santa Cruz

A pretty recent effort, this entry from Brazil is absolutely hilarious and brought a smile to our face. Not content with smashing the bar with his first clearance, Nautico decides that he really does want to score an OG and slams in an equally ridiculous header.

Lee Dixon – Arsenal v Coventry

A superbly lofted finish, this particular effort from Lee Dixon qualifies because we have to ask what he thought he was trying to do when he hit that pass back to his keeper. Well Lee, what the hell were you at?

Djimi Traoré – Burnley v Liverpool

Dancin’ Djimi Traoré produces a moment of sheer magic. Again, we don’t know what his plan was here.

Chris Brass – Bury v Darlington

Not only was this a ridiculously embarrassing own goal (immortalised by Soccer AM on their ‘Taxi’ segment), but he also broke his nose while attempting this clearance. Unlucky.
