Gael Monfils deserves ten out of ten for effort and entertainment for this ridiculous trick-shot attempt, but it was ultimately pointless and quite costly in the end.

The Frenchman is known for being an entertainer and something of a showman on the court and while that is to be welcomed, it didn’t do him any good during his quarter-final against Tommy Haas in the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany yesterday.

Although he was one set up at the time, Monfils was serving to stay in the second set at 5-3 down and with the score at 15-15, he had an easy winner on after Haas had lobbed a high ball that landed just over the net and bounced up invitingly for Monfils to hammer home.

Instead, he took the opportunity to let the ball bounce through his legs before hitting it, allowing Haas to regain his position and work his way back into the rally, win the point, win the set and eventually, the match.

We can’t imagine that Haas was too happy about what could be interpreted as a sign of disrespect and we’re sure Monfils probably regrets doing it at this stage.

Not that it will stop him from doing it again of course.
