JOE will always have a massive amount of love for Stiliyan Petrov because the Bulgarian was always equally impressive off the pitch as he was on it.

During his time in Glasgow he won four league titles, three Scottish Cups and three league in an illustrious career before following Martin O’Neill to Villa Park.

The midfielder quickly became a darling of the Holte end, winning Aston Villa player of the year twice, and Petrov was paid the ultimate accolade by being named in the club’s hall of fame this year.

Sadly, the 35-year old was forced to retire two years ago after being diagnosed with leukaemia but we’re delighted to see him making a return to fitness with Sunday league side Wychall Wanderers in the Central Warwickshire League.

Villa fans still idolise the Bulgarian, as seen by the constant chorus of applause during the 19th minute of their home games.

On his return to the football pitch, Petrov said: “Everything is fine, touch wood. There are only three months to go on tablets and I’m finished. I’m on steroids until January.

“I’ll be there again on Sunday but don’t ask me who we’re playing.”
