Video: Greg Bolger’s bloody brilliant goal for St Pat’s in title deciding match

If you are going to win the league, you might as well do it some style…

If you are going to win the league, you might as well do it some style…

It was a classic end-of-season showdown in Inchicore last night. A win for St Pat’s would secure them a first title since 1999. For Sligo Rovers, a win would keep them in the hunt for back-to-back titles.

In the end, it was the home side who did the business, wrapping up the Airtricity crown with a 2-0 win at Richmond Park.

The fantastic picture above was taken after Anto Flood’s decisive second, but it was the first goal, by Greg Bolger, that was the real highlight of the day.

After a ball bounced around the Rovers area for a whil,e the ball eventually fell to the Pat’s midfielder, who composed himself before unleashing a rasper to the top corner.

And he was honest enough to tell the Irish Times afterwards that he was more than a little lucky it went in.

“I shanked it and didn’t even see it go in, I only knew it had from the reaction of the crowd. I couldn’t believe it really, it’s my first goal of the season. Liam kept telling me to shoot more but every time I did the ball seemed to hit the corner flag.”

We reckon Greg will be shooting more next season.
