Video: Here are the goals from St Pat’s superb Champions League performance in Poland last night

Almost a famous win, but the 1-1 draw achieved by St Pat's against Legia Warsaw still deserves to be celebrated.

Almost a famous win, but the 1-1 draw achieved by St Pat’s against Legia Warsaw still deserves to be celebrated.

We’d imagine there are a few sore heads around Inchicore this morning. Last night, St Pat’s played the first leg of their 2014-15 Champions League qualifying round tie against Polish champions Legia Warsaw and it was one of the best ever Irish performances in Europe. Nobody gave our title holders much of a shot but Liam Buckley’s side put in a sensational display, only denied a famous win thanks to a cruel equaliser in injury time.

The home side had eight internationals in their team, and a raucous home crowd, but it was Pat’s who played the better football all game and they deservedly took the lead in the 38th minute via Christy Fagan, who finished off a fine counter-attacking move.

In the second half Legia dominated the ball but created few chances. However, as the game winded its way to a close, Pat’s tired and eventually, a Miroslav Radovic shot went through the legs of Brendan Clarke to leave honours even. It was disappointing not to hang on for the win but Pat’s can take huge heart from the display

The second leg will be played in Tallaght next Wednesday, so fingers crossed Pat’s can play equally well and complete the job.
