There was no knockout and it was a quite comfortable victory for Mayweather in the end, but Canelo Alvarez made the man known as ‘Money’ earn his ridiculous fight fee last night.
36-year old Mayweather defeated the Mexican on a majority decision for his 45th straight victory at the MGM Grand last night, with two of the judges calling it in his favour on scores of 116-112 and 117-111 respectively, while a third called it a draw on a score of 114-114 to the bafflement of the overwhelming majority of observers. Alvarez did trouble Mayweather in a couple of rounds but for the most part, Mayweather landed more punches and proved as elusive as ever and it became clear with a few rounds to go that it was going to take something drastic from Alvarez if he was to upset the odds. Mayweather stood to earn at least $41 million from the fight and he can now sit back and find ways to spend it with his ridiculously-sized entourage until another challenger comes his way but even at 36, he looks nigh on unbeatable at this stage.
