A fitting way to end an outstanding game in Newbridge yesterday.

The National Football League kicked off at the weekend and, judging by some of the high-scoring tallies recorded in games throughout the country, it kicked off with a bit of a bang too.

The encounter between Kildare and Mayo was arguably the pick of the bunch in Division One as just the one point separated the sides after they shared 41 scores (2-19 – 2-18) between them over 70 entertaining minutes.

That one point turned out to be a bit of a beauty and arrived in dramatic circumstances as Kildare’s Paddy Brophy landed his sixth point of the game from near the right touchline on the stroke of full-time to give Kildare what could be a badly-needed two points come the end of the league campaign.

The fact that it came almost immediately after Kevin McLoughlin had kicked what looked to be the equalising point for Mayo made it all the sweeter and it was lapped up by a very enthusiastic home crowd in St. Conleth’s Park at the end of what was a rip-roaring affair overall.

More scores and more games like this over the next couple of months certainly wouldn’t go amiss.
