The Hail Mary shot was thrown by Ylii Lopez of Riverbank High School in a clash against close rivals Ripon High School after Riverbank had foiled a Ripon attack with seconds remaining at the end of the third quarter. Knowing there was little time left, Lopez threw a dinger of a shot from under his own basket that rebounded firmly off the opposite backboard and straight into the basket, a shot that was celebrated as if it was the winning score in a final even though it merely increased Riverbank’s comfortable lead from 29 to 32 points. And rightly so too, by the way; you certainly don’t see this every day and Lopez will probably never do anything like it again.
