It would have been even better if it had been in the fourth quarter and resulted in a one-point victory for the team in question, but it’s still pretty impressive nonetheless.
The Hail Mary shot was thrown by Ylii Lopez of Riverbank High School in a clash against close rivals Ripon High School after Riverbank had foiled a Ripon attack with seconds remaining at the end of the third quarter.
Knowing there was little time left, Lopez threw a dinger of a shot from under his own basket that rebounded firmly off the opposite backboard and straight into the basket, a shot that was celebrated as if it was the winning score in a final even though it merely increased Riverbank’s comfortable lead from 29 to 32 points.
And rightly so too, by the way; you certainly don’t see this every day and Lopez will probably never do anything like it again.
Lap up the acclaim young Ylii, lap it up for as long as you possibly can.
