He won a silver medal and made us all very proud but Donegal man Jason Quigley couldn’t contain his disappointment in an incredibly emotional post-fight interview on RTE this morning.
Quigley was defeated on a unanimous decision by his very classy Kazakh opponent Zhanibek Alimkhanuly in the World Championships middleweight final this morning but he can be proud of his performance in the fight and in a tournament where he became the first male Irish fighter to win a silver medal at that level.
Although he will probably reflect proudly on that achievement eventually, it was no consolation to Quigley immediately after the fight as he fronted up for an emotional post-match interview with RTE’s Hugh Cahill in which his disappointment was etched all over his face.
Billy Walsh immediately paid a fitting tribute to Quigley for what he has achieved and considering that this was his first loss in 33 fights, there is little doubt that Quigley will go on to bigger and better things.
