Video: Lionel Messi's not the only one breaking records in Spain
Many will argue that he’s not quite on the same plain as Lionel Messi, but Cristiano Ronaldo is gobbling up goals at an even quicker rate than the Argentinean genius.
Last night, the Portuguese superstar became the fastest player to reach 100 goals in La Liga history with two goals in Real Madrid’s 5-1 thrashing of Real Sociedad at the Bernabeu, taking his domestic tally to a quite ridiculous 101 goals in 92 league games.
In the process, the greasy ex-Manchester United winger broke a record previously held by Real legend Ferenc Puskas, who scored 100 goals in 105 games back in the middle of the last century.
The brace also took him to 35 goals in the league this season, a tally he shares with Messi, who was also on the scoresheet as Barcelona won 2-0 in Mallorca to keep the heat on their great rivals at the top of the table. In case you needed reminding, Messi officially became Barcelona's all-time leading goalscorer with a hat-trick against Granada during the week.
At a measly 45 goals for the season so far, Ronaldo is a little short of Messi’s 54-goal haul, but he is well on track to beat his tally of 53 for last season and also to break the La Liga record of 40 league goals in one campaign, which he himself set a year ago.
The genius of both Messi and Ronaldo is almost taken for granted nowadays, but we might as well appreciate it while we can for we are unlikely to ever see such prolific net-busting for some time once they’ve hung up their boots.
Take a look at Ronaldo’s record breaking goal in the video above.
