The 2011 Melbourne Cup produced one of the tightest finishes ever overnight as French horse Dunaden pipped Ed Dunlop's Red Cadeaux by a nose.
Dunlop was looking to win the Australian Classic for the first time for Britain and it looked like Mike Rodd had piloted Red Cadeaux to victory before Christophe Lemaire forced a little bit extra from Dunaden to take the prize.
The French jockey said after the race: "I was a bit anxious after the line. A rider on a pony told me they thought I had won and then when I turned the corner back towards the stands, everyone was applauding me.”
Last year’s winner Americain was fourth with Lucas Cranach taking third at Flemington.
