If you’re looking for sympathy from a pundit after a football match, then don’t go looking to Ireland assistant manager and ITV analyst Roy Keane.

The former Irish captain has a reputation for being a straight-shooter and he lived up to it on ITV last night when the panel were discussing Manchester City’s 2-0 defeat to Barcelona, a result that has as good as eliminated them from the Champions League.

Responding to an interview with City captain Vincent Kompany in which he expressed his thoughts that the home side were the better team and that Barca were not the best team they had faced all season, Keane said that the Belgian was “obviously really tired” and said that he wasn’t sure if Kompany knew what he was talking about.

Such a frank reaction doesn’t always go down well with fans of the clubs involved while the pain is still raw in the immediate aftermath of a defeat, but it’s hard to argue with Keane’s logic that Manuel Pellegrini’s side were taught a harsh lesson and that it would be “almost impossible” for them to turn the tie around in the second leg.

Cold? Maybe a little. Harsh? Hardly. Just Roy telling it like it is as always
