No word as yet what was wrong with the multiple Wimbledon champ but this is very worrying footage. We hope she is okay.
One of the all time great Wimbledon players, Serena Williams was forced to retire from her doubles match with sister Venus today following some very disturbing play by the younger sister.
Looking very out of sorts in the warm-up (above) , the footage below of Serena is very hard to watch. From her frankly awful attempts at serving to her inability to bounce or catch the ball, Serena looked to be very disoriented.
Eventually, with the sisters losing 3-0 in the first set, they retired from the match, with Serena in tears as a trainer attended to her.
UPDATE: BBC and others are reporting that a viral infection caused Williams’ to perform in such a way.
In a statement, Serena said: “I am heartbroken I’m not able to continue in the tournament. I thought I could rally this morning because I really wanted to compete, but this bug just got the best of me.”
