The Lions won the first test against the Wallabies today but they must have been sure that defeat awaited them when Kurtley Beale stepped up to take a last-minute penalty. Then this happened...

With only two points between the sides and only minutes left on the clock in an absorbing first test in the Suncorp Stadium, Beale missed the chance to put the Wallabies in the lead when he shanked a penalty wide of the post from a relatively straightforward position. He was given the chance to, as Jeff Daniels’ character in Dumb and Dumber might say, ‘totally redeem himself' after the Wallabies won a penalty at the death, but his feet gave way from under him on his approach and the ball trickled harmlessly over the line while the Lions celebrated what could be a vital victory. In fairness to Beale, he was excellent after coming on as a second half replacement and had earlier kicked far more difficult opportunities than the ones he missed but those kicks may well end up haunting his dreams tonight. More of that drama in Melbourne next week please.
