VIDEO: Sports stars from Ireland and beyond promote a fantastic St. Stephen’s Day charity GAA match in Limerick

A fantastic cause

A great initiative for a great cause.

If you’re in Limerick and looking for something to do this St. Stephen’s Day, there’s a great event taking place in Mungret St. Paul’s GAA club that is well worth going down to for a look.

A lot of sports clubs organise charity events over the Christmas time, but this game, which will pit a team of current members of Mungret St. Paul’s against a team of exiles home for the Christmas, is no ordinary Gaelic Football match.

It’s being organised by Donal, Micheál and Eoin Cahill in memory of their father Stephen, a dedicated Mungret St. Paul’s clubman and former chairman of the club, who sadly passed away in October of an acquired brain injury having suffered a brain haemorrhage six years ago.

All proceeds from the game will go to two charities, Headway Ireland and Cheshire Ireland, both of whom took great care of Stephen in the last six years and who do sterling work throughout Ireland.

Donal, Micheál and Eoin have gone above and beyond in their efforts to get the word out about the event, coming up with an initiative whereby a well-known sports star records a video each day in the build-up in what they’ve called ‘The 12 predictions of Christmas’.

Well known GAA figures such as Anthony Daly, Podge Collins, Gary Brennan, Aidan O’Mahony and Michael Fennelly have already given their predictions, as have CNN broadcaster Shane O’Donoghue and former NBA coach Bob Hill.

Former Dallas Cowboys star Robert Williams has also lent his support, as has current Ulster and Ireland centre Jared Payne.

The predictions will continue to appear on the page over the coming days until the big event on St. Stephen’s Day so keep an eye out on the event Facebook page to see who’s going to be next and for all the details about the event.

Speaking to JOE this week, event organiser Eoin Cahill was very keen to pay tribute to the two charities involved, Cheshire Ireland and Headways Ireland, for the support they provided for his father and the support they continue to provide for people throughout Ireland.

For more information on both charities, check out the Cheshire Ireland and Headway Ireland websites.
