Video: Superb 1987 Sports Stadium feature on Kerry football team surfaces on YouTube

Put aside 20 minutes to bask in the utter brilliance of this look at the Kerry team from 1975 to 1987.

We have to say a massive thanks to Aidan O’Donoghue who has just uploaded this piece of vintage gold to YouTube before kindly letting us know about it.

It is a feature from an episode of the long departed Sports Stadium that was broadcast in 1987 to coincide with a special banquet held in Kerry to commemorate the Kingdom team of the previous 12 years.

It may be 20 minutes long but it is worth every second. From the welcome sight of Brendan O’Reilly as host, bringing back so many memories, to Mikey Sheehy’s famous goal, to the spectacle that is then Kerry Chairman, now MEP Sean Kelly’s frilly shirt, this is YouTube gold. And that’s just the first few minutes.

There’s lots of footage of players who are sadly no longer with us, like Paidi O’Se, and there’s also an interview with John Egan, another who went far too soon. Also included are interviews with a very fresh faced Jack O’Shea, John O’Keefe, Ogie Moran and Pat Spillane.

Perhaps most interesting is Mick O’Dwyer talking about the hard work required for Kerry to get back to the top, this just one year after winning the All-Ireland in 1986. Of course, it would be another decade before they got their hands on Sam again.

A remarkable bit of video, so thanks again to Aidan for putting online. Enjoy.
