Pardon the age old football cliché but Zenit St Petersburg away is never an easy fixture for opposition teams in the Champions League and trying to get a result proves even more difficult when you score ridiculous own goals like the one Atletico Madrid did in Russia this evening.
His name won’t go down beside the own goal in the official records, but the man most certainly responsible for the goal was ‘keeper Thibaut Courtois, who allowed a harmless looping defensive header from Toby Alderweireld drop into his own net for a Zenit equaliser in a game that eventually finished 1-1.
We’re not sure whether Courtois thought that the ball was going over the bar or that he was just way too casual about punching it away from danger but in any event, he made a complete balls of it and ensured pride of place on the numerous 2013 football blooper reels that are bound to be coming your way in the next few weeks.
