You can’t take this out of the game of hurling after watching the likes of Carey, Ring and Canning do their stuff.

Tomorrow, the GAA’s standing committee on playing rules will meet and one of the top subjects up for debate is the 20-metre free. After Cork’s Anthony Nash lit up the summer of 2013 with his devastating efforts, much talk was made of how his lifting motion resulted in Nash striking the ball around 13 metres out, gaining seven with his style.

The committee is expected to ban advancing from the 20, so the days of high-velocity net busters could be over.

In a late bid to save Nash’s, and others, style of 20-metre free, a ‘Save Hurling Skills’ channel has uploaded a video showcasing some of the best efforts over the years.

From Nash to Shefflin, Davy Fitz to Damien Fitzhenry, there are over three minutes of gems here and it ends with some great archive footage of the great Christy Ring demonstrating how to take the free, a technique that involves advancing from the 20-metre mark.
