Video: This Pires-style penalty looks illegal but it was allowed in Korea

Robert Pires and Thierry Henry attempted this a few years ago for Arsenal and it failed miserably.

In the recent K-League classic between Jeonbuk Motors and Pohang Steelers, Jeonbuk came out on top with a 1-0 victory thanks to a very soft looking penalty decision that led to the only goal of the game. The scoring of the penalty, however, was inventive if nothing else.

The referee allows the goal to stand as the rule states that the ball must be moving forward before anyone else can touch it. The eagle eyed JOE team did spot an encroachment into the penalty area by the eventual scorer and for that reason it should have been re-taken. Anyway, here it is in all its illegal-looking glory:

The aforementioned French internationals were ridiculed for attempting what looked like an illegal penalty a few years ago at Highbury, when many questioned if it would have been allowed had they scored. It’s the second penalty in the video below and it goes hilariously wrong.

We’re absolutely mortified for their mothers in fairness…

The original idea came from Dutch master Johan Cruyff, who did it and succeeded all the way back in 1982 for Ajax…

How many of you will try this the next time your side is awarded a penalty this weekend?
