Well, it’s official – Michael Sam is the first openly gay player in the NFL.

The St. Louis Rams made Sam the 249th overall pick of the NFL draft at 6.50pm ET on Saturday, with the former NFL general manager and ESPN analyst Bill Polian heard to say: “Good for you, Michael.”

Sam was then filmed talking on the phone with the Rams and breaking down crying, as he was told that he would make sporting history in the United States and beyond.

The 24-year-old, like any seventh-round pick, will find it tough to break into the 53-man roster.

However, the fact that he was drafted at all comes as a minor surprise as it was beginning to look like he wouldn’t make it.

Sam is seen by many as not having a natural NFL position despite winning the co-SEC defensive player of the year award at Missouri.

However, he now has the chance to prove his doubters wrong and that he has a future at the top of American sport.
