Video: What was this Swedish goalkeeper thinking?

We don't know what was going through Peter Abrahamsson's mind, but we have a fair idea what his manager was thinking.

We don’t know what was going through Peter Abrahamsson’s mind, but we have a fair idea what his manager was thinking.

Getting your goalkeeper sent off is one of the worst things that can happen to a football team. The sub is probably a sub for a reason and you have take off an outfield player to get him on. It’s a double whammy that can really only be justified when the keeper sees red for illegally stopping a vital goal, and even then some managers and fans would still say it’s not worth it.

That’s why what Peter Abrahamsson, the last line of defence for Swedish second division side Örgryte, did last night is so stupid. Playing Hammarby, the keeper ran out and deliberately handballed a non-too-dangerous ball miles from his box in the very first minute of the game. Just 44 seconds in in fact.

He looks stunned by what he did, as does his gaffer.

And you won’t be surprised to learn that Örgryte lost 3-0.
