Five-year old Irelyn Maloney was born with a rare genetic disorder called Familial Mediterranean fever, which has necessitated 40 hospital stays and six surgeries in her brief life to date and prevents a sports-mad young girl from being able to compete in them.
Irelyn has always wanted to be a footballer and the New York Red Bulls generously helped facilitate that dream recently when signing Irelyn on a one-day contract and letting her train with the first team squad, which includes Premier League legends Tim Cahill and Thierry Henry.
Irelyn even managed to dribble past half the Red Bulls team and score a goal during her time training with the squad and happily exchanged high-fives with all of the players after her big moment.
