JUST when we thought there would be penalties, Germany substitute Mario Gotze took down Andre Schurrle’s cross and did this.

Argentina were completely spent as the Bayern Munich playmaker coolly slotted past Sergio Romero, and when Lionel Messi – who looked jaded from the second half onwards – failed to convert a free-kick in the final seconds, Germany were celebrating a famous win.

Joachim Loew’s side became the first European side to win the World Cup on South American soil, and were deserving winners having destroyed hosts Brazil 7-1 in the semi-final.
