Vine: Mayo legend Ciaran McDonald scored an outrageous long-range point for Crossmolina at the weekend

He’s still got it.

He’s still got it.

Until Ciaran McDonald can no longer walk there will be calls from some Mayo supporters for him to be recalled to the county set-up such is his iconic status within the county and it looks as if saddles might have to be prepared for the bandwagon again this year after his exploits at the weekend.

McDonald, one of the finest strikers of a ball in the history of Gaelic Football, is still playing senior club football with Crossmolina and he delivered one of his trademark outrageous scores in Deel Rovers’ victory over Davitts in the league on Saturday night.

There’s even better video footage of the kick here (via Paul Jennings and Aidan Mullen) here…

The Crossmolina Twitter account said it was kicked from 55 metres, others said it was closer to the halfway line (in pubs across Mayo next week, it will probably be said that he kicked it from his own ’21) but while one could argue over the distance till the cows come home, one can’t argue about the quality of the point, which sailed over the bar with plenty to spare.

Reminiscent of the many brilliant points he scored in the green and red during the day, it probably won’t be enough to merit a return to James Horan’s squad but it is a reminder that, when it comes to McDonald, class is indeed permanent.
