“They thought I was finished.”

Virgil van Dijk is once again the man of the moment following his winning goal deep into extra time in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday afternoon.

The Liverpool captain headed the winner into the back of the net as Jurgen Klopp’s severely depleted team beat Chelsea 1-0 in the final minutes.

The Dutch defender, who had another header ruled out by VAR in the second half, eventually saw success but now Irish fans are talking about something completely different.

In the changing rooms after the final whistle was blown, Van Dijk was caught on camera addressing his haters in a thick Dublin accent.

In the clip, reminiscent of SaltBae’s infamous Limerick avocado, Van Dijk is heard saying to the cameraman: “They thought I was finished.” The clip was captioned: “He was not finished.”

Van Dijk has also delighted his fans in Ireland with his heaps of praise for the boy from Cork, Caoimhin Kelleher, of whom he said: “I’m probably one of his biggest fans, I’ve always said he’s world class and he stepped up again today.

“It’s good to see, he’s a good goalkeeper and that’s what we need at a club like Liverpool.”
