With an Irish man on the team, it’s only right that the footballers give GAA a go.

As we eagerly await the return of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic, all Irish eyes are on Georgia Tech’s star punter David Shanahan, the first Irishman to receive a full American football scholarship to play football at a college level. To celebrate his imminent return to Irish shores for the game, Kerry, the proud partner of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic, captured a training session where David introduced his teammates to his first sporting love – Gaelic football.

The video celebrates David’s upcoming return to Irish soil later this year, when his team will take on Florida State in Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on Saturday 24 August. Over 25,000 international visitors are expected to join us for an incredible weekend of sport, while over 4 million people are due to tune in to ESPN’s live broadcast of the event.

David grew up playing Gaelic football and he played on the Kerry 2017 Minor Panel. With a solid background in the sport, it was only fitting that he put his American football teammates – Gavin Stewart, KJ Wallace, LaMiles Brooks, and Billy Ward–  to the test during their visit to Castleisland. Their Gaelic football immersion kicked off with a solo kicks session before they got to grips with hand passes. The GAA experience culminated in a round of sudden death, with David himself fielding his trainees’ shots from the goals.

During their session, David seemed to enjoy being a GAA taskmaster, and seriously raised the stakes with Sudden Death. However, he ended up succumbing to a beautiful – and surprising – defeat by one of his teammates.

You can see how the American footballers got on by watching the video below.

To fuel up for their session, the lads were treated to some quality Irish food and drinks courtesy of Kerry Group. Just as David is proud of his sports journey, Kerry Group takes enormous pride in creating a world of sustainable nutrition, making products that are tastier, healthier and more sustainable for the global food and beverage industries.
