But during the Beeb's coverage of the action in the velodrome on Saturday night, Sir Chris let his high standards slip a bit, getting busted checking his phone twice.
On the second occasion, viewers particularly enjoyed his reaction.
After quickly realising that he was on live television (thanks to a nudge from Clare Balding), he swiftly hides the phone under a piece of paper on the table in front of him - grinning like a kid that had just been caught on their phone by a teacher...
