WATCH: Martin O’Neill’s Christmas message and reflections on 2016 is guaranteed to give you goosebumps

Conor Heneghan

It’s been an amazing year.

When Martin O’Neill looked forward to the year ahead at the start of 2016, he probably didn’t envision it going quite as well as it has done.

Overall, the Euros was a more than satisfactory experience and it’s got even better since as we sit pretty at the top of the qualifying group for the World Cup in Russia in 2018.

In his Christmas message to Irish football supporters, however, it is the recollection of the individual moments from the last year that stand out.

Wes Hoolahan’s goal against Sweden, the sheer delirium of Irish supporters after Robbie Brady’s late strike against Italy and more, moments that we could (and will) watch over and over again here.

Many happy returns to you Martin; let’s make 2017 an even better one.
