Skibbereen is the place to be tonight.

Paul and Gary O’Donovan arrived home to a heroes’ reception at Cork Airport on Sunday night, a reception fitting of their exploits at the Olympics and the World Rowing Championships.

The nation took the brothers from Skibbereen to their hearts thanks to their silver medal in the men’s lightweight double sculls event at the Olympics and a series of charismatic and often hilarious interviews throughout the competition.

If that wasn’t enough, Paul went one better when winning gold in the Lightweight Single Sculls at the World Rowing Championships in Rotterdam on Saturday, rounding off a hell of a month.

The O’Donovans had been looking forward to their homecoming from a long way off and it didn’t disappoint on Sunday night, with big crowds gathering at Cork Airport to give them the welcome they deserved.

Another Cork legend, boxer Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan was even on hand to provide the steak and spuds famously referenced by the O’Donovans in one of their memorable interviews from Rio.
