WATCH: RTE’s Neville Maxwell was in tears in studio following the O’Donovans’ silver medal
To see how much it meant to him was something to behold.
Practically all of Ireland was bursting with pride following the silver medal won by Paul and Gary O’Donovan in the men's lightweight double sculls rowing event in Rio earlier today.
It was wonderful to witness the reaction of Paul and Gary and of their mother Trisha to what was a truly magnificent achievement; Ireland’s first medal in the 2016 Olympic Games.
It will probably take a while for the achievement to sink in for Paul and Gary, but for Neville Maxwell, part of an Irish team that finished fourth at the Olympic Games in the Atlanta in 1996, the impact was immediate
Maxwell couldn’t hold back the tears as he was overcome with pride at the exploits of the brothers from Skibbereen, who have managed to rise to national treasure status in recent days.
