WATCH: The Mayo footballers take on the crossbar challenge with mixed results

Conor Heneghan

Rumour has it, the last time the Mayo footballers did a crossbar challenge before an All-Ireland Final was in 1951…

We’re joking, of course – we’re not sure if the crossbar challenge existed in 1951 – but the Mayo footballers did take some time out from the serious preparation for the All-Ireland Final to give it a go recently in a video organised by their sponsors, Elvery’s Intersport.

The big guns from Stephen Rochford’s side – Cillian O’Connor, all three O’Shea brothers, Andy Moran, Alan Dillon, Lee Keegan and Donie Vaughan – all gave it a go and missed and some of them won’t want to see their efforts back again in a hurry.

Their embarrassment was saved, however, by Brian Reape and David Drake, who both struck the bar from just outside the ’21 for a slightly respectable score of two in the finish.
