Irish soccer’s showpiece event takes place at Aviva Stadium next week, the Ford FAI Cup final. This year’s game features two teams who have tasted cup glory in recent seasons; Sligo Rovers and Drogheda United.
For the Bit O’ Red, it is only two years since they lifted the FAI Cup while Drogheda’s solitary win came in 2005. Both sides came through very tricky semi-finals to make the big day, with Sligo doing down Shamrock Rovers, while Drogheda came out on top of the Louth derby with Dundalk.
But the path to the final doesn’t really matter now, it is down to who performs on the day. In recent seasons, the final has been a cracker. Four of the last five have gone to extra time, three of those to penalties, so this year’s game has much to live up to.
We were treated to a preview just last week when Drogheda travelled to The Showgrounds to face Sligo. That game featured two penalties and ended 3-1 to the home side.
