Westmeath hurlers to serve hot meals to the homeless in Dublin tonight

Conor Heneghan

A fantastic gesture.

The Westmeath senior and under-21 hurlers will serve hot meals to the homeless on Grafton Street in Dublin on Monday night.

Members of both panels, who are foregoing a post-match meal to perform the gesture, will distribute 100 hot meals to the homeless from 8.30pm on Monday evening in an attempt to raise awareness of the issue in Ireland in the run-up to Christmas.

Before they distribute the meals in Dublin, the Westmeath players will also serve seven homeless people in Mullingar, with Westmeath under-21 hurling manager Adrian Moran co-ordinating the event.

It really is a fantastic gesture from all involved and the Westmeath hurlers are hoping that other inter-county teams across the country might follow suit.

Speaking to Midlands 103 Sport, Westmeath player Liam Varley explained how the idea came about.
