After less than 10 months at Old Trafford, David Moyes was shown the door this morning. Now the question is who will step in to replace him as the next permanent manager of Manchester United?

And just like that, he was gone. After a truly woeful show against Everton at the weekend, and a day of speculation about his future, David Moyes was officially ‘relieved of his duties’ as manager of Manchester United this morning.

Now everyone’s thoughts turn to who will take over? Here are the leading contenders, as priced up by Ladbrokes.

Louis van Gaal, 7/4

The favourite right now, the Dutchman is free after the World Cup when his duties with Holland are over. The 62-year-old has an impressive CV (Bayern, Barca and Ajax) and he could be the ideal candidate to steady the ship after the chaos of the Moyes reign. Of course, at 62, he is not a long-term solution and if the club decide they want to pick a man who could manage them for the next decade, then it won’t be Van Gaal.

Jurgen Klopp, 7/1

The ever-popular German is on the wanted list of lots of clubs who do, or will, need a new gaffer this summer. Linked heavily with Barcelona last week, Klopp has said repeatedly that he wants to stay at Dortmund, where he is contracted until 2018.

With Dortmund booking their Champions League spot for next season over the weekend, we can’t see Klopp leaving for the United job, or any other job for that matter.

Ryan Giggs, 7/1

Confirmed as interim manager this morning, appointing the Welsh man permanently would be a risk. With no experience as a number one, even if he inspires United to a winning end to the season, this job may have come too soon for Giggs. He may well stick around to work under the new regime but we think making Giggs the manager would be a huge gamble by the Glazers.

Diego Simeone, 14/1

Now we’re talking. The job the Argentinian has done at Atletico Madrid has been nothing short of sensational and if he can hold off Barca and Real Madrid and win the La Liga crown this year it will be even more impressive. Oh yeah, and he has them in a Champions League semi-final too.

If United can get him, we think Simeone would be a great appointment but like Klopp he seems very committed to his current project.

Alex Ferguson, 16/1

Would the club go back, at least for now, to the old boss? Stranger things have happened but there is no indication that the man himself fancies getting back into the thick of things. Yes Matt Busby came back, but we just can’t see Fergie back in the dugout.

Jose Mourinho, 16/1

Many fans felt United made a mistake not picking the Special One last summer. With a chance to rectify that mistake now, could they prise Mourinho from Chelsea? Jose doesn’t look to be too happy with life at Chelsea right now so we reckon he would jump at the United job if they offered it to him. Question is, would the board do it?

Roy Keane, 100/1

The longest odds offered by Ladbrokes this morning are for the Cork man. With managerial experience as well as being a club legend he has those two things going for him but with his role at the FAI, he is occupied right now.
