Mayo are doing okay at the moment but the form of Pearce Hanley in Brisbane must cause a pang of regret or two out west.
We have come to accept that we will lose a small number of players to the AFL. Most will come back after a year or two and slot right back into the inter-county GAA scene. The talk of the GAA being seriously threatened by an AFL exodus was just that; talk.
But the odd one really makes it big there and Mayo’s Pearce Hanley seems to be doing that right now.
Because of his size and skills, Hanley was coveted by the AFL sides long before he made his debut for Mayo and now all that potential is coming to fruition after years of hard work.
Hanley played all 22 games for Brisbane last season and he is in even better form this year, finding time to range forward and get a few goals from his position around the middle of the field.
And against Melbourne at the weekend he bagged a hat-trick as the Lions crushed the Demons by 61 points. You can see two of Hanley’s scores above. Skip to 1.47 to see his first and go from there.
Mayo, and Gaelic football, fans wish he was appearing in this country but he is certainly representing the country well in the AFL.
