With Battlefield 1 releasing , we’ve put together some tasty details to get your senses tingling. This one’s going to be big. Like, World War One big.

Battlefield is back

Anybody who’s familiar with the series (and especially those lucky enough to play the open beta last month) know what they’re getting themselves in for. Huge-scale battles, stunning graphics, in-depth customisation and non-stop action.

All of the game modes you know are there. including Conquest, Domination and Rush. This year has also seen the arrival of a new mode, Operations, which will carry the battle across multiple maps and span over an hour per match. Jaysus.

The beta had 13 million players and was the most successful in EA’s history. If those numbers are anything to go by, there’ll be no lack of heads to compete with.

The maps

Battlefield 1’s maps will bring you around the world, from deserts to forests to destructible cities. World War One had such a vast array of different battlefield terrains, it’s a wonder they were able to recreate so many.

Here are their names to get your imagination twirling:

Ballroom Blitz, Argonne Forest, Fao Fortress, Suez, The St. Quentin Scar, Sinai Desert, Amiens, Monte Grappe, Empire’s Edge.

The single-player campaign

The multiplayer is always the star of the show in Battlefield, but this year the offering for offline gaming looks seriously good. You’ll get to play across five different ‘War Stories’ – campaigns with different characters spread across different theatres of war.

The trailer below should do a whopper job of whetting your appetite. With this kind of source material, we’re expecting an incredible story.

The weapons of the time

From swinging a sabre on horseback to launching a flamethrower, these lads aren’t messing about. Each fully-customisable weapon will have it’s own strengths and weaknesses, and it’ll be up to you to discover your own play-style.

The weapons will make for a refreshing alternative to the astro-mech-warriors and futuristic laser weaponry we’ve been getting bombarded with of late. (Obviously not in real life but just in terms of gaming trends. Clearly I don’t mean real life.)

The melee combat

The Great War was the dawn of all-out war. Some of its operations are still the largest and most brutal in human history.

Reflecting this, the developers have improved the melee combat. It’s deeper and more varied than in any previous Battlefield game, with players able to choose from weapons as varied as bayonets to maces and shovels.

The vehicles

Anyone who’s played any of the Battlefield games knows how big a role vehicles play in any battle. From light tanks to land-ships and motorcycles, the ground game in Battlefield 1 provide plenty of variety.

The same goes for the battles at sea where you’ll be able to captain torpedo boats and an armored landing craft. And that’s without getting into the tanks or planes.

There’s DLC

EA have released details of a free new map coming one month after the game launches. DICE have been quiet on the details so far, but it’s gonna be called “Giant’s Shadow” and it’s gonna have a big bloody airship crashing on the battlefield.

Combined, these factors make Battlefield 1 the biggest release since Germany released its armies on Belgium and Luxembourg. There you go, now. There’s a nice little World War One joke there to see out the article for you.

Battlefield 1 is released worldwide on October 21
