Irish Amazon customers are about to get their deliveries much faster, it would appear.
Amazon, the world’s largest online marketplace, is set to open its first fulfilment centre in Ireland.
According to The Irish Times, via
Bloomberg, the fulfilment centre will be located on a 650,000 square foot premises in the Mountpark logistics centre in Baldonnell in West Dublin.
A delivery warehouse for Amazon Prime customers opened in Rathcoole in Dublin last year, but this would be the first Amazon premises in Ireland where products are picked and packaged for delivery by Amazon staff.
This would mean faster delivery times on items purchased from Amazon by Irish customers, many of which are currently processed in the UK and delivered in Ireland by An Post.
Gillez Fernandez, commercial director of An Post Commerce, has described the proposed centre as “good news for Irish Amazon customers”, saying: “By avoiding the Brexit pipeline, Amazon can get their parcels to us in An Post faster for immediate delivery to the customer.”
As has been the case elsewhere, orders from Amazon have been subject to the delays that have affected the delivery of items from the UK since Brexit became official at the turn of the year.
Based on the recent opening of a similar fulfilment centre in the UK, the new Amazon unit in Ireland could also lead to the creation of up to 1,000 jobs, but Amazon has thus far declined to comment on “rumour” or “speculation”.
