The app itself is quite simple – it can pinpoint your location on a map and from there you can simply draw a circle around where you are and hey-presto it will show you exactly what people in the area are listening to.

This feature becomes even cooler when you consider using it while travelling abroad so you can see what music is popular in a certain country. The technology uses information from sources such as Spotify to determine what is being listened to without revealing who it is that is listening to it.

Soundwave is set to disrupt the music industry with its ability to track in real time what people are actually listening to – much-needed data for an industry that is suffering from a shortage.

In a recent interview, Bono declared, In a time soon coming, we will actually get to understand what people are listening to as opposed to buying. Wouldnt you love to actually be able to find out what people are actually listening to? Thats going to change the game for everybody.

Launched just this week, it has already appeared as the worldwide App Store’s Editor’s Choice and last night was officially launched in Apple’s Regent Street store by actor and twitter leviathan Stephen Fry. The app is free to download and takes just a minute to get setup and then you’ll be off onto the new generation of music discovery.

To find out more about the app and to download it on iOS or Android then check out the Soundwave website.
