We all knew Battlefield 3 has going to be a smash hit but after selling 5 million copies and becoming EA’s fastest-ever selling title, we’ve been took by surprise.

Considered the biggest threat to Call of Duty‘s continued dominance of the military shooter genre, last Friday’s release hit shelves nearly two weeks ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 but has put down a considerable marker, sales-wise.

“From Tokyo to Los Angeles, Sydney to London, millions of fans have been playing all weekend long – we are overwhelmed by the global response to Battlefield 3,” said EA exec Patrick Soderlund on the sales.

“It is extremely gratifying to deliver an entertainment experience that delights our fans, and to have the opportunity to introduce new people to the franchise.

Already, we are seeing unprecedented play times and online activity which is very rewarding. This launch solidifies Battlefield as a leading entertainment brand.”

EA have also reported 73 million saviour kills from players in the past week and the destruction of 67 million vehicles. Did you spend much of the weekend in Rush mode? Let us know how you’re finding the multiplayer in the comments section below.
