Best of the week in tech

Samsung’s flexiphone

Just like when they invented those glasses that you could bend without breaking them, the new flex screen from Samsung could be the future or just a random fad. Still, it seems like a cool idea and would definitely lead to a lot less problems with cracked screens, which have been an issue for smartphone users who are less than careful with their handsets. That said, if something did go wrong, we can only imagine how much it would cost to replace that screen…

Despite the display and reports that models might be shipped later this year, the processor remains in the little box attached to the bottom, so we don’t think this one won’t be hitting the shops until they can visibly improve the aesthetics of it a bit.

TV kills the mobile star

Usually CES is known for companies launching their best smartphones, but there have been a few developments in TVs that have been pretty exciting. In years to come, we could all be using our brainwaves instead of the remote if Haier can get the project off the ground.

They weren’t the only company exhibiting brainwave controlled devices though, in particular we look forward to the NeuroSky getting the KickStarter funding they need to launch their brainwave controlled cat ears.

While 4k TVs are a great step forward, they remain prohibitively expensive to buy and to film for, with the average flick filmed in 4k taking up around 10 terabytes, they won’t get much love from the vibrant streaming industry.

OLED is most likely to be the technology that revolutionises the box, with curved displays offering less distortion at the edges as well as the possibility of making displays that are paper thin, maybe even flexible ones too. Still expensive mind, expect five figures, minimum.

Sticks and stones…

The Pebble smart watch will start shipping to Kickstart backers on the 23rd of January it was announced at CES. The smart watch which will hook up a user’s smartphone and watch, so you can get vibrating alerts about texts or calls that you might be missing. It can also be used in conjunction with apps to track your running, cycling or workouts, and more developers will get involved as the device goes into full launch mode later in the year.

The screen is also the same screen from the Kindle, which looks pretty slick and is easy to read. Other features include being able to manage your music, as well as caller id. It also tells the time!
