The latest iteration in the Call of Duty series will apparently be titled ‘Project Collosus‘ and is heading for a November 8 release, according to reports.

If Europe’s biggest independent video games website, Eurogamer, are to be believed then the site has heard from ‘multiple sources’ that the new Call of Duty title will be released on November 8.

If true, the release timeframe would fit alongside previous releases, such as last year’s Black Ops (November 9, 2010) and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (November 10, 2009). Most surprisingly, however, is that this year’s release may not be titled Modern Warfare 3, as was previously thought.

Instead, the site has reported that an internal Tesco database refers to the game as Call of Duty: Project Collosus. If accurate this would coincide with rumours that the next game will actually be a prequel to the first Modern Warfare installments, rather than a straight sequel.

After the 26 million-selling Call of Duty: Black Ops, Activision are now under pressure to replicate the success of the industry’s biggest franchise year-upon-year, while facing increased opposition from EA’s stunning upcoming rival Battlefield 3.

In recent years the Call of Duty series’ releases shifting development on a yearly basis between Infinity Ward (Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2) and Treyarch Studios (World at War, Black Ops). However, Activision is still locked in intense legal battles with the Infinity Ward’s founders, Vince Zampella and Simon West after firing two upon claiming that both had held meetings with rival publishers EA.

The duo’s exit sparked a mass exit of Infinity Ward employees, who joined the newly-founded Respawn Entertainment, which is part of the EA Partners Program. Rumours persist that this year’s release, officially an Infinity Ward production, has needed a helping hand from fellow Activision studios during its development.

Activision are holding a conference call at 21:30 BST tonight, at which time the new Call of Duty installment could be officially announced.
