Could this be the next big thing in social media?

Snapchat is still quite popular among young people, but it’s arguable it’s not the same beast these days it used to be.

Which is why you may be excited to hear that Facebook is reportedly preparing to build a new app on top of Instagram to “facilitate more intimate sharing of information” between pals.

According to The Verge, the new app will be called Threads, and it sounds a whole lot like Snapchat.

You will be able to update your status manually, with statuses appearing in the main feed along with messages.

Threads will also enable you to update your status with more conventional posts such as text, photos and videos, showing just how similar to Snapchat it might be.

When a user opts in to automatic sharing, Threads will regularly update your status, giving your friends a real-time view of information about your location.

Sounds a bit scary, actually…

Instagram has constistently updated its platform with various features over the years – some of which are similar to features that had already been housed in Snapchat and it is currently trialling a feature in Ireland that hides the amount of likes visible on posts.
