Pic: This is how Ireland compares to the rest of the world when it comes to broadband speed

Not the worst, but far from the best either

Conor Heneghan

Not the worst, but far from the best either.

We’ve come a long way from the days of dial-up connections and not being able to use the phone the and Internet at the same time, but we still have a bit of catching up to do, it seems.

Ookla, a global leader in broadband testing, have published the list of the countries with the fastest broadband speeds based on millions of recent tests by Ookla Speedtest in the last 30 days.

As you’d probably expect, Ireland is far from the top and the bottom of a list that contains 198 countries, from Singapore at the top with lightning speeds of 110.04 Mbps (Megabites per second), all the way down to Niger, where broadband speed is positively snail-paced at just 0.51 Mbps.

Ireland is ranked 37th in the list with speeds of 27.3 Mbps, a little bit behind the United States (33.49 Mbps) and the United Kingdom (30.18 Mbps), but way ahead of the likes of Australia and Italy, who rank in 59th and 97th place respectively.

Considering how certain countries in the east appear to be way ahead of the game when it comes to all things technology-related, it is no surprise to see Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan in the top ten, while Europe are represented by Monaco, Romania, Sweden, Lithuania and the Netherlands.

We’ll get there yet lads…
