Revealed: These mobile apps drain your data – even when running in the background

JOE

Most of us know by now that using certain mobile apps can eat into our battery and data much quicker than others.

We’ve already told you Facebook is among the biggest offenders when it comes to battery life, but it turns out some apps can use up a ton of data in the background – even when you’re not using them.

Citing research from Opera Max, Tech Times reports that Gmail and Facebook Messenger are by far the worst offenders.

Some 73% of the data usage from the two apps comes when you’re not even using them, with the work they do in the background eating right into your overall allowance.

WhatsApp and Google Drive are not much better, according to the research, with both conducting more than half their data usage while running in the background.

It might seem awkward, but it can help to close the apps when you’re not using them – even if you then have to go to the effort of opening them afresh the next time you want to use them.
