Review: Canon Legria HF M56

JOE

Video cameras are not often something we think about, given we’ve got a camera on our phones, but sometimes that quality isn’t going to cut it

In fact, JOE was pretty impressed with the Legria and put it to the test in a few of our own videos, including the JOE show and a few others, as well as filming a darts match between the office ginger Alan Metcalfe and Dave “magic fingers” Hewitt, which would rival Taylor v Barney any day. That video was censored by the authorities, unfortunately.

The Legria has a touch screen display which was surprisingly easy to use, despite the fact that it’s a very compact unit. It’s a nice touch (no pun intended) but not something that we would consider indispensable.

The main feature that will be of most interest is the built in WiFi, which lets you share your videos quickly and easily. It’s a great touch, and something that Canon have been including in their cameras recently too, which will continue to be a really important feature in the future we’re sure.

Something else that the lads at Canon put in their cameras and have slapped in to the Legria is their image stabilisation system, which makes a big difference when it comes to shooting images, especially given that this camera captures in HD. Now, while we didn’t go sky diving, here’s a pretty decent example of what it can do.

There’s 8GB of memory on the camera itself, which is enough for under an hour of high def footage, but you might still want to carry a decent SD card around to make your life easier in this regard.

Overall, the main point here is that a video camera wasn’t something that we had considered before this, but it actually comes in pretty handy. The phone is ok for the spontaneous times we want to get something recorded, but it’s not going to cut it when we need to record an event that’s going to be worth remembering.
