Review: Sennheiser Momentum On Ear headphones

JOE

Sennhesier have released their latest on-ear headphones in a range of colours, and they’ve been creating quite a buzz

We don’t, of course, mean that literally when it comes to the sound quality, we mean that there’s been a hugely positive reaction online from tech bloggers and reviewers to the Momentums, and having tried them out ourselves over the past few weeks, it’s pretty easy to see why.

In this package you’re getting some seriously fantastic build and sound quality, and while that normally comes at a price, these aren’t as stonkingly expensive as you’d think. The bass is clear without overtaking all the other sound ranges, and clarity is excellent, as you would expect from Sennheiser, who pride themselves on getting things right in that department.

The earcups are made from Alcantara, something that the makers of luxury cars and yachts use for their intereriors, so you know you’ve got good quality on your ears if they’re using it on a boat. That’s long been our motto here at JOE towers anyway.

Importantly, we wear glasses, since we’re so powerfully hipster (and we can’t see so hot) and they don’t press the arms in above our ears, which is something that a lot of cheaper headphones will do, meaning we have to take them off after about half an hour, or listen to music through the sound of us gritting our teeth.

Comfort is key for us in pretty much everything we do, but so is style, and not only do these headphones look high end with brushed stainless steel sliders to get a nice fit, but they feel it thanks to the materials used, right down to the case they come in, which is also plush and secure.

These nicely tread the line between style and function, and with a slightly retro look and whole range of colours to choose from (pink, pistachio green, blue and cream), they’re not as gaudy as many of their competitors are. That touch of class suits our style nicely, as we’re currently trying to work bow ties in to our autumn/winter wardrobe. More on that at a later date of course.

They’re also not huge and don’t make you look like you’ve got some sort of 1970s radio heaphones on, which is another thing that many other headphones do which we don’t enjoy, and the understated style of these is a big plus point in our eyes.

If we had to pick up on one point, it’s in the noise isolation area. These aren’t top end studio headphones that are going to keep every bit of noise out, which was never going to be the case with any on-ear headphone. That’s not to say they don’t block out a decent bit of noise, and it would only be an issue if you were walking on a very busy and noisy road or something along those lines. We used them on a plane and they were pretty decent, so we can’t complain on that front.

They also come with a three button remote that allows you to control iOS so you can use these with your iPhone or iPod, and the pause function does work on our Samsung Galaxy (although the volume didn’t).

All in all, these headphones are pretty fantastic, and we’re big fans. While the noise isolation is a small point, it’s not enough of a point to stop us from getting them, and with an RRP of €199 they also come in as priced under a lot of the others in this range. For what you get in terms of sound and build quality, these are top of their class. They’re available in a whole host of spots, including our mates at Compu B and Arnotts, so check them out there.
