When Wayne Rooney scored an equalising goal at Wembley on Saturday night twitterers went tweet crazy. It was the second highest spike in tweets per second – ever.
A high of 6,303 tweets per second (TPS) was recorded by @twitterglobalpr just moments after Wazza smacked one past Victor Valdes and it came close to topping the all-time record of 6,939, recorded just after the new year in Japan.
‘Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu’, meaning, yes you guessed it, ‘Happy New Year’ was the most common tweet on 1 January.
That record doubled the outstanding high of 3,283 TPS, also from Japanese influene, during the nation’s World Cup win over Denmark last summer.
Last night’s Twitter frenzy, however, does set a new highest sporting event record, previously held by Super Bowl XLV which came in at a peak of 4,064 TPS.
There was also 6,277 TPS recorded when David Villa scored the third and final goal for Barca in their emphatic Champions league final win on Saturday.
Activity on Twitter after Osama Bin Laden’s death was also on the high end of the scale recently with a peak of 5,106 TPS prior to US President Barack Obama making his speech.
