Woman hit with phone bill of over €1,600 for using too many emojis in her text messages

Let this be a warning lads.

Some people can’t send a text message these days without using 45 emoticons to express their mood, but they might be careful about doing so in future after hearing the tale of emoji-loving Scottish woman.

Paula Cochrane discovered to her horror recently that she had accumulated phone bills of just under £1,200 (approximately €1,615) largely due to her use of emoticons, which were costing her £1 a go without her knowing.

After she took out a new contract with mobile provider EE, the emojis Paula was frequently using in text messages were costing £1 apiece as they were being charged as picture messages.

Despite signing a contract that cost £30.99 per month, Paula racked up bills of £1,192 over a four-month period, including £486 in a single month. That’s a lot of emoticons.

“I am raging. I have never heard of this before and I’ve had a mobile phone for years,” Paula told the Daily Record.

“Even the staff at my local EE shop were shocked when I told them. They knew nothing about it.”

“The adviser explained that the charges were for emoticons, the Japanese smiley face symbols. I couldn’t believe it,” Paula added.

“Do EE really think I’d run up these bills if I knew the cost? It’s daylight robbery.”

EE did offer to cut Paula’s bill by £100 but, understandably, she’s still a little p*ssed off about the matter and is taking her case to the ombudsman in the hope of gaining further recompense.

We’d imagine words cannot describe Paula’s anger right now; only emojis could do such a job.
