JOE

Here at JOE, we’ve always considered rock music to be a blokey business, but that’s not exactly the case…

Think Aerosmith legend Steve Tyler – all tight trousers, testosterone and trout pout. With notable exceptions like Patti Smith and Janis Joplin, the canon of classic rock would seem to be a female free zone.

Not so, according to those clever people at the University of Limerick. And to prove their point, the boffins at the Sociology Department, are holding a day-long shin-dig (ahem, symposium) on women and rock music on Tuesday, April 16.

Riot Grrrl! is a free event where you can get all deep and meaningful with the likes of Dr Eoin Devereux, whose own back catalogue includes weighty tomes on Morrissey and David Bowie.

Highlights include an interview and unplugged performance with stateside rock three-piece, Girl in a Coma (pictured above). For more details and for bookings click here.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
